In a bold move announced this week, Methven Care Trust is to create up to 20 new care rooms in Methven.

The trust has acquired what are currently called The Crossroads Lodge and separate apartments next door, with the intention of transforming the two buildings into new levels of care for residents.

It has long been the trust’s objective to enable Methven to look after its own, so that people can spend their retirement years within their own community. The town’s steady growth has made this even more feasible, but a new solution was required.

Methven Care Trust Chair, Janine Holland, said “This is an exciting development for Methven. We have operated aged care out of Methven House for many years and our former maternity hospital has served the community tremendously well. However, due to an ever-changing regulatory environment and evolving residents’ needs, it’s time to move into modern premises.”

The plan is to create up to 20 care rooms in the main Crossroads building, including spacious and en-suite options. There will also be six two-bedroomed apartments in a separate block which will be repurposed for independent retirement living.

Methven Care Trust had planned to build a new facility in Camrose Estate on gifted land. However, rising building costs, constraints on development and a lengthening timeline to complete a full build meant the Crossroads option became more appealing than starting from scratch.

“The development of the new Methven Care complex is expected to take a couple of years. The service needs to be operating as soon as possible to replace the current facility Methven House.”

“The trust has been able to make this purchase using funds raised to date, assistance from Advance Ashburton (who administer the former Lochhead Charitable Trust funds) as well as support from private donors. However, we will be looking for assistance to retrofit the building to make it appropriate for aged care. We know there is a lot of support and we are excited about reactivating fundraising to enable us to open for business within two years.”

Methven Care Trust will work closely with the Methven Aged Persons Welfare Association, (MAPWAI) which operates Methven House, on the operational needs for the new facility.

“It is a joint mission of MAPWAI and Methven Care Trust that we work together to achieve a new rest home for Methven,” said Janine Holland.

Methven Care Trust launches new concept plan

Methven Care Trust unveiled fresh new concept plans for a multi-stage aged care complex last week at its AGM.

Independent villas and serviced apartments are new features of the proposed development in the heart of Camrose subdivision.

The trust’s original concept plans focused on a rebuild of the Methven House resthome, but professional advice suggests the addition of independent living options will ensure the entity is financially viable.

Chairperson Janine Holland said the trust had worked hard over the past few months to consult the community to determine what was missing in the complex, and what would make it sustainable.

“Villas and serviced apartments allow people to remain independent, yet have the assurance of adjacent rest home care if and when needed. We are confident of a positive response from locals given the interest shown to date.”

Other items reported back at the AGM included the audited accounts, which provide full transparency on how the trust is managing its funds. Copies of the audited accounts can be accessed by emailing admin@methvencaretrust.co.nz. A professional fundraiser has also been secured to work with the trust to support conversations with donors who wish to contribute to the project.

The trust was originally gifted 1.5 acres of land off Alma Place to purpose-build a new aged-care facility, and subsequently bought four adjoining sections to future proof the development. Methven House is coming to the end of its useable life and the new facility will provide modern care in a vibrant, attractive part of Methven.

New Trustees

In April the trustees of Methven Care Trust decided it was time to hit the pause button on fundraising, and instead undertake consultation with the community around the feasibility and ongoing support of our project.

We put out a survey which attracted more than 50 responses, and also held community meetings in June and July, which attracted good support.

The prevailing theme was "get on with it", "we back you", and "we will help you find the money!"

We've since taken action to respond to the key areas of feedback.

As part of this, we would like to welcome Peter Wadea and Dave Grant on board as new trustees.

Peter, our local pharmacist, was born in Egypt, and moved to NZ with his family at age 9. In his spare time, Peter is a Deacon at St Mary and St Athanius Coptic Orthodox Church in Christchurch, and is also currently studying Theology. Through his work as a pharmacist, Peter has regular contact with the residents of Methven House, and he is looking forward to offering his support to Methven Care Trust as a medical professional and local business owner.

Dave was born at Methven House back when it was the Methven Maternity Home. His mother Nola currently resides at the Methven House flats, and his father Graeme also resided at Methven House. Dave has been living and farming in the Methven area his whole life, and believes in the importance of Methven continuing to have its own aged care facility. Some things you might not know about Dave – he’s only moved house twice in his life, and his ‘Triumph Rocket’ is his most prized possession – after his wife Ros of course!

We are looking forward to the business and medical expertise that Peter and Dave will bring to Methven Care Trust.

We have also looked into reviewing the design and costings of the Resthome to ensure we are being as cost-efficient and realistic as possible, while ensuring the facility is future-proofed (that we're not missing major industry trends). We’ve now had two experts in the field critique our plans and costs and we will report back on this at our upcoming AGM (7pm, Monday 6th December at Methven Golfclub).

We’ve also been looking at how to open up more funding avenues and to do this we’ve met with a professional fundraiser, and again, will report back on this at our AGM. We can't thank everyone enough for community fundraisers, GiveaLittle donations and support of our events, but to accelerate progress we need larger funding pools. Many people at the community meetings suggested they would be interested in funding parts of the complex and contribute to the remaining deficit. We are looking into how this could be structured with professional advice, and we will come back to those who have approached us privately and in confidence.

We reported in May that our net assets are now close to $1.9million. This includes four purchased sections, two term investments and cash in an on-call account. It does not include the donated land that the Lochhead Charitable Trust gifted us, or the MAPWAI assets of Methven House and its land. We're very appreciative of businesses like Molloy Agriculture Ltd and Pyne Gould Guiness for initiating fundraisers over winter to boost funds.

We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to provide feedback to us throughout our consultation process this year. Our administrator, Hen Royston has begun working in a shared office space in Methven and this will continue next year, allowing an additional point of contact for anyone who would like to provide feedback or discuss fundraising ideas in person. We would like to thank Mark Jacobs very much for providing a space for Hen to work out of for the latter part of 2021.

New House Build Fundraiser - Go Big AND Go Home!

A 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, double garage house at Camrose Estates!

Although the idea was floated a couple years ago by the Trustees; it was reignited with the assistance of Maree Firth at Methven Real Estate. Jo Suyker, Chairperson of the MCT, commented, "this is a Trustees project, and with the generous support of Camrose Estates and Stonewood Homes, it has become a reality".

The house is not an off the shelf design, Stonewood Homes have spent time to create a home that best fits that particular section. There are many people to thank for getting us this far, including Andrew Monson of Camrose Estates and Vivian Cameron from Stonewood Homes.

Colin Lill, Trustee, added, "There have been and will be, lots of big and little jobs to be completed along the way. The costs can add up significantly, however, our local businesses have offered their skills, equipment and time to get them done. Every contribution by our community members is gratefully received".

The weather has been kind so the build is well underway and on time. Snowfed will be providing progress reports over the next few months.

This is a truly exciting community project that many of us will have contributed towards and will culminate in a very special key handover ceremony to the new owners!

PGG Wrightson BIG FUNDRAISER

What started off as just a spark of an idea, over a cup of tea, evolved over the next eighteen months into an event attracting over 200 people and raising $21,000 for the Methven Care Trust (MCT).

There were a few hurdles along the way, Roger Henderson, Trustee for MCT commented, "it wasn't the walk in the park we thought it would be". However, the main organisers Nicola Lee, Melissa Gooseman and Graeme Jones managed them well with the awesome support of Sue van den Heuvel, MCT Fundraising Co-ordinator.

Finding sponsors was not one of the hurdles, as Mark Hanrahan, Mid Canterbury Account Manager for PGG Wrightson explained, "being a NZ wide company, we were able to approach our national clients for sponsorship. They were happy to get on board for this great community cause. Although we originally approached chemical suppliers for the auction, we ended up with a huge range of fantastic prizes".

Mark went on to say, "I was a bit hesitate at first about the quiz part of the evening, but it turned out to be a real draw card for the night and a great success:. This was backed up by Jo Suyker, Chairperson of MCT, who said, "We were really impressed by the support from our young community members. The evening attracted a whole different group of people who would at their age, not normally be thinking about an old peoples home". I asked Melissa how long it took to get all the quiz questions together and where she got them from, she responded, "Everywhere! It took about three and a half weeks to research and complete".

The PGG Wrightson staff thought it would be a 'farmers night out' however, the interest from outside that circle helped swell the numbers to over 200. Mark observed, "The Mt Hutt Memorial Hall isn't small and it was an impressive sight to see so many enjoying themselves. This made it all the more worthwhile".

There are many thank you's that PGG Wrightson and the MCT wish to mention: Sue van den Heuvel, Jude Henderson, Alice McKerchar, Anne Wells, Sam Brown the Auctioneer, and all our very generous sponsors and other supporters on the night.

$21,000 means another two bricks in the wall on the progess chart in The Mall and another step closer to achieving the goal of building a new care home fo Methven's residents.

Trust wants new resthome open by 2029

Methven Care Trust (MCT) members have committed to a ten-year timeline to get a new rest home for Methven and its surrounding community open and running.

The service needs to be operating by 2029 as the current facility ‘Methven House’ will not last beyond this timeframe, says MCT chairwoman Joanna Suyker.

New earthquake building standards and the age of Methven House mean it is no longer feasible to maintain the building for much longer. With no ensuite bedrooms and a cramped kitchen and dining room, a new purpose-built facility for caring for the elderly is overdue, she says.

Methven Care Trust members have fundraised $1.05 million over four years towards the estimated cost, along with the donated land onto which we intend to build. The trust needs to raise more funds locally to give better credibility before applying for grants.

Widespread support for the project was evident in 2012 when a public meeting at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall attracted around 200 people expressing their support for a new community-run, not for profit resthome in the town. The meeting voted to proceed and deliver on this vision.

Since then the Methven Aged Persons Welfare Association (MAPWAI), and its funding arm the Methven Care Trust (MCT), have worked together to explore ideas and generate funds for the project.

“It is a joint mission of MAPWAI and Methven Care Trust that we work together to achieve a new resthome for Methven. We are committed to protecting the future of our elderly by ensuring they have a place to live in as they become more vulnerable,” says Joanna Suyker.

One of the biggest issues for the project is the reality of rising building and consenting costs, and Methven Care Trust is tackling this by undertaking feasibility studies at the moment to revisit options, including how costs can be reduced.

“We are very aware that as we fundraise, the projected cost of the project may rise, so we need to be adaptive. We are open to feedback and welcome suggestions from the community as to how we can stage the development.”

Methven High Country Fete Donation 2018

Organisers of the Methven High Country Fete, Denise Dixey and Julie Sergeant ,were really pleased to be able to donate a further $1,000 to the Methven Care Trust following the Methven High Country Fete in November.

Denise said, “ We are grateful to the MCT committee/volunteer members who work hard to raise the funds for the new aged care facility; working the gate all day for our event. This year, despite the weather putting many people off coming, we had great support from o...ur community and hard core fans from our previous years fetes.”

Sun Shines on House & Garden Tour fundraiser

There were a few sighs of relief as the sun came out on Saturday 10th November for the Methven Care Trusts 4th annual House & Garden Tour fundraiser.

This year included a total of seven stunning properties, plus plant stall, raffle, and a display of vintage and classic cars. One of the properties was also hosting the BBQ lunch for visitors.

The day went really well, with lots of great feedback including:

"What a fantastic day out. Enjoyed it all and thanks to all the participants who let their homes and gardens be open to us. Fabulous. Can't wait for next year!"

"Perfect day out. Thank you so much to all the home and garden owners (sho I'm sure were pulling their hair out on Friday with the snow) and to the volunteers who manned the lovely homes."

"Amazing day, great house and thanks to all involved for the amazing food for lunch".

Methven Care Trust would like to say a big THANK YOU to Methven House for assisting with all the baking of slices for the BBQ, also a massive thank you to Sandy Redmond and her trusty helper Di Callaghan for all their efforts in co-ordinating the plant stall, which raised almost $1,500 of the overall figure of $10,500 raised.

2018 Methven & Foothills House & Garden Tour Fundraiser

Dahlia memory to continue

Methven Care Trust was very grateful to receive a donation from Kate Wilwert and Barbara Wackwitz to the value of $668.00, in memory of their parents, the late Margaret and Colin Wilson.

The money was raised from selling dahlia bulbs from their garden.

Kate said, "Mum and Dad (Margaret & Colin), brought the dahlias with them when they came to Methven from the farm. We found an old diary of Dad's from 1941 (Dad would have been 15years old) where he described that he had 'lifted the the dahlias' (took them out of the ground in autumn, to sort for winter). We're sure the plants Mum and Dad tended in Methven at their home, are descended from those originals".

Chairperson & Treasurers Report - AGM 1st August 2018

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT – Joanna Suyker

Methven Care Trust has had another active year. MCT joined the 40 years celebration of Methven House in April 2017 and took the opportunity to showcase the trusts purpose and achievements to residents, their families and invited guests.

The local farm lease for the benefit of the trust continues to be a welcome constant in our fundraising efforts. MCT has taken the opportunity to purchase lambs and is running these on the leased land whilst a local farmer gives his time and expertise to oversee them for us.

The Methven & Foothills House and Garden Tour has become our trademark annual local event, allowing us to embrace the goodwill of our community in offering their homes and gardens to be viewed by the public. We are forever grateful for the communities generosity in allowing us to run this day, $10,000 was raised last November. MCT is proud to be able to sustain this fundraiser as we enter our 4th consecutive year of the event. Please mark your calendars for Novembers 10th for this year’s event.

MCT continues to humbly accept annual donations from Methven A&P Assoc, Methven Lions Club, Methven Rodeo Committee, High Country Fete, and Czech Christmas Cookie fundraiser. On a monthly basis from the local businesses, retired couples, the families, the widowers and the widows. On a weekly basis from the local mum that works three cleaning jobs to feed her family and deposits $10 without fail in the trusts account – thank you!

We have been the benefactors of inaugural events such as the Methven combined Churches Christmas Carols gold coin donation, Childcare @ Sue’s Lilly fundraiser, the gate takings from the 70th year Landrover Celebrations held at the showgrounds, and the proceeds from the Methven Young Farmers Club “Bark up at The Blue’. Methven Pottery Club, BNZ Closed for Good cake stall. Ian Totty Memorial Variety Concert, Mid Canterbury 4 wheel drive club Mud plug takings.

Methven Care Trust joined with Methven House and profiled the two organisations at the Ashburton Aged Concern Expo in Ashburton.

The trust ran a hugely successful Hyundai win a car raffle. We were delighted to have a national corporate support us and it was great to be able to offer a high end prize, and a local winning the car was such an appropriate outcome.

We were sad to have to accept the resignation of fellow trustee Ron Smith from the trust due to ill health. Ron’s enthusiasm and passion for the cause has been well cemented in our foundations as we move forward on the project. We were delighted to welcome Sir Graeme Harrison on board to fill this vacancy.

Two very significant events took place for MCT over the last year. The first being we took ownership of the .6ha site in the Camrose subdivision late 2017, donated by the Lochhead Trust. A milestone in itself as the trust seeks to raise the funds for the new build, and a momentous day for Mrs Lochhead onsite as the wishes of she and her late husband Allan came to fruition.

The second significant event for MCT reached on the last day of our financial year this March was hitting the $1million dollar mark on funds raised. This was able to be achieved not only by all mentioned, but by the huge generosity of three donations, two of $100,000 and one of $200,000. When I was summoned by the latter donator, who wishes to remain anonymous, I had no idea of the size of the donation I would be coming away with. They said two things to me; 1) “nobody needs to know about this, and 2) this was in my will, but what’s the point of that when maybe I can see some progress on this project while I’m still around.”

These words sum up this project for me, no accolades or bright lights needed for these generous beings, just an absolute urge to commit to this cause they see as worthy for our community. Portraying their trust and faith in MCT to get the job done instils credibility to the cause and hopefully they will still be around to experience that.

TREASURERS REPORT – Alison Muckle

It is with pleasure that I present the financial report for the Methven Care Trust for the year ended 31 March 2018.

The 2018 income from donations, fundraising activities and interest, totalled $1,073,475 compared to $233,693 the previous year. This is a reflection on how the community is getting in so strongly behind the trust and want to see this wonderful project succeed.

Operating payments are higher than the previous year – this is due mainly to the purchase of $15,252 worth of lambs that will be sold this year or next. Overall the trusts expenses are minimal.

$570,000 has been paid to purchase land, with the balance of $340,000 due by 30 January 2020 – this is the exciting part – the dream is actually physically underway. This has all been made possible by the wonderful efforts of the trust and in particular the donations made by this great community. This year 4 very generous donations were received – we are so grateful.

We have now raised $1.5 million towards the $5 million target – fantastic, but we must not lose this momentum.

Here I would like to suggest that if you have ever thought of leaving a legacy in your will – why not consider giving while you are alive. This way you can see what your money has done and as an accountant I have to add that for every dollar you give to a registered charity (which Methven Care Trust is), you will receive 33 cents back in donation rebates from the government (not a bad return on your money).

Finally, as awkward as it is to ask for money – this is not for us, but to build a fabulous facility for our locals.

Young Farmers 'BARK UP' donation

Methven Young Farmers hosted the 'Bark up at the Blue' event, on Saturday 19th May.

45 entries were vying for 'Best Farm Dog, Best Dressed, Best U13'. Bryce Yorke, a Shepherd from Banks Peninsula took out the biggest prize for 'Best Farm Dog'.

Kelsie Laing said, "the Bark Up committee made up of Lucy Dynes, Brooke Dickey, Ezekiel Turner, Billy Dowle and myself, were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses, who sponsored us with an amazing range of prizes. We decided to donate money to Methven Care Trust as we wanted to give back to our community and support the hard work of their team".

This was the first time the 'Bark Up' event had been held in Methven, and based on how successful it was, and the awesome feedback they received, Kelsie said, "we will definitely be looking at running another Bark up in the future".

HYUNDAI WIN A CAR Winner announced

Congratulations to Brent Anderson from Methven, lucky ticket winner of the 2018 HYUNDAI Accent 1.6, RRP $24,990.00.

Brents ticket was one of a total of 400 sold as a fundraising venture we partnered in conjunction with Hyundai & Isuzu Mid/South Canterbury.

She also acknowledged, "working with Greg and the crew from Hyundai has been an absolute pleasure, we were just overwhelmed that they would join with us and believe in our cause by agreeing to support this unique fundaiser".

A huge thank you must also go to a special number of individuals who made it their crusade to sell tickets through their business and personal contacts. Also, our four amazing enthusiastic retailers here in Methven, Hammer Hardware, Primo-E-Secundo Café, FarmSource and Ruralco. We just couldn't have gained the sales momentum of tickets without having accessible ticket locations. In return, we shouted them all morning tea to say thanks (see photos below).

Methven Lions donate from golf tournament proceeds

It is no secret here in Methven that we have a very dedicated and hard working Lions Club within our community.

So last week we were so thankful to once again be a benefactor of the Methven Lions annual golf tournament fundraiser, resulting in a cheque being donated to our Chairperson Joanna Suyker, to the value of $7,000.00.

In accepting the cheque, Joanna said "our fundraising cause is for the community, we can't do it without community support, and the Methven Lions are such an integral part of our community. We (MCT) have in the past received substantial donations from your club, and we thank you once again for your support, not only on behalf of the Trust, but our Methven community."

Trust funds hit $1million mark

After surpassing the $1million mark, the fundraising team behind Methven Care Trust is feeling more confident about its goal of rebuilding the town's community-run resthome.

Three significant, anonymous donations of $200,000, $100,000 and $100,000 in the first quarter of this year saw funds raised to date increase to just over $1million. Another close to $20,000 should arrive next month from the trust's raffle of a Hyundai car, Methven Care Trust chairwoman Joanna Suyker says.

"The trust has worked tirelessly to reach this point and we'd like to pause and thank our supporters and the wider Methven community for getting us here. It's no small feat raising $1million in this economic climate and we've been told the first million dollars is the hardest. We especially would like to thank the three anonymous donors who contributed significant amounts this year. It's a real show of faith in our project and we're very grateful for this boost."

Methven Care Trust is a fundraising group set up by the Methven Aged Persons Welfare Association (MAPWAI) to raise funds for, and oversee, the building of a new aged care facility for Methven. Trustees have been drawn from the Methven and foothills community and work alongside Methven Care Trust fundraising co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel to deliver fundraising initiatives hand-in-hand with the community. The trust's goal is to replace the existing community-run resthome Methven House within the next few years. The estimated cost is $5.5million.

There is an urgent need to replace Methven House as the building is rapidly reaching the end of its useable life, says Joanna Suyker.

"Methven House has served us well for 40 years but it certainly won't last another 40. It's vital we attract sufficient funds so we can get on with building a new facility that will care for the elderly in our district," she says.

Recent fundraising activity includes a raffle for a Hyundai car which will be drawn late May. With only 400 tickets on sale at $100 each, punters across Ashburton District have embraced the opportunity to win a car at such good odds, says Joanna Suyker.

The raffle was launched at the Methven A&P show last month and tickets can be purchased from Primo-E-Secundo Café, Hammer Hardware, FarmSource and RuralCo in Methven.

Other funds this year have come frm the Landrover 70th anniversary celebrations, leasing of land for farming activities and a lily fundraiser initiated by Sue Duff's childcare operation. More fundraising ventures are being sought from the community.

Land Rover to celebrate 70 years

On Sunday March 25th, Land Rover vehicles from all over New Zealand converged on the Methven A&P showgrounds to celebrate seventy years of the Land Rover vehicle and brand.

During the course of the day enthusiasts were invited to come along with a Land Rover vehicle to join in the display which was the largest held to date. Land Rover vehicles include the well recognised Series and Defender models, all Range Rover and Discovery models, the Freelander, Sport and Evoque. In fact any vehicle bearing the Rover name was welcome.

The day showcased the evolution of the most basic and hardy vehicle that evolved in to a prestigious luxury 4x4. Vehicles lined up in their respective models for display, but throughout the day there was an option of participating in a simple gymkhana to show driving skills. Further entertainment included 'Capstan' winch displays including a tug-of-war, Land Rover fire engines, oldest vehicle v's youngest, and a working Rover gas turbine jet engine.

Our Methven Care Trust volunteers were invited to co-ordinate the gate entry which was gold coin donation, at the end of the day we received a very sizeable donation to the value of $1,971.30.

Sir Graeme Harrison joins Methven Care Trust

Sir Graeme Harrison has been confirmed to join Methven Care Trust as a Trustee.

Joanna Suyker, MCT Chairperson, said “we are delighted that Sir Graeme has accepted our invitation to join the trust, having someone of this calibre join our team just shows the support that Methven Care Trust has in our community”.

Born in Methven, Graeme returned as a resident in 2010 with his wife Barbara after an absence of 45 years. In the intervening years he went to university in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, spent 13 years based overseas, founded one of New Zealand’s leading export businesses and represented the country and his business on numerous trade missions and in international forums.

Graeme was the inaugural Chairman of the New Zealand International Business Forum for 8 years, served on national bodies such as the New Zealand-China Council, and has a number of current involvements with Lincoln University. He has long been associated with the New Zealand meat industry and has held company governance roles for extended periods in seafood and dairy.

Graeme has been honoured by the Governments of New Zealand (2011) and Japan (2015). In 2010 he was named Federated Farmers Agribusiness person of the year and in 2016 he received the Rabobank Australia and New Zealand Leadership Award.

Graeme’s parents, Kath and Tom Harrison, were residents of Methven House.

Along with Chairperson Joanna Suyker, Graeme joins existing Trustee’s Janine Holland, Jan Anderson, Colin Lill and Roger Henderson.

Another successful Czech Cookie Fundraiser

Baking, packaging and distributing 317 boxes of festive cookies all for our fundraising cause, now that's an example of true community Christmas spirit!

That's exactly what, for the second year in a row, a group of enthusiastic Czech Republic friends undertook again to show their support of Methven Care Trust.

Vendy Snajdrova is the driver of this unique idea and co-ordinated sourcing supplies and friends. Thanks to the Methven Heritage Centre for allowing the use of kitchen facilities for the team to bake away!

Jo Suyker, MCT Chairperson, was thrilled to meet with some of the Czech cookie baking crew to accept their donation cheque of a whopping $3,170.00.

Thanks to Methven High Country Fete organisers for a donation of $1600.00 resulting from our team assisting with car parking and gate sales at the Methven High Country Fete on Wednesday 22nd November at the Methven Racecourse.

Denise Dixey, co-organiser of the fete said "as our fete grows, so does our ability to assist local organisations through donations or complimentary stalls at the fete. Methven Care Trust help us on the day by manning the gate and car park, so the majority of our donation goes to their fundraising efforts for the new Methven House."

2017 House & Garden Tour

Thank you to all who supported our Methven and Foothills House & Garden Tour which took place on Saturday 11th November, what a great day it was for all involved.

Whilst the day started out a bit on the cold and damp side, it soon cleared and provided blue skies and sunny back drop for our 3rd annual fundraiser. Methven iSITE opened early on Saturday morning for last moment ticket sales and this proved a successful move as a large number of tickets were sold an hour prior to tour commencing.

Feed back from the day was all very positive, everyone really enjoyed the variety of the properties, which was a great mix of new and older homes. The Devonshire tea was very popular, thanks to the committee and staff from Methven House, nearly $800 was raised. In total the event raised $9,500.

Jo Suyker, MCT Chairperson said "we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make this event happen, from those who donated prizes for the raffle, Methven SuperValue for their support with the Devonshire Tea, Marya and staff from Primo-E-Secundo Café for hosting our volunteers briefing and post event after-match function. The staff at ISITE for selling so many tickets, Ray White Real Estate and Spirit Magazine for again coming on board as primary sponsors. Most importantly our volunteers for giving up a day to manage the properties, the property owners for all their hard work in the many months leading up to the tour and allowing us all in their amazing homes and gardens, and to everyone who supported Methven Care Trust by purchasing a ticket".

House & Garden tour set to entice

Tickets for 2017's Methven & Foothills House and Garden Tour go on sale soon with the organisers promising a range fo new and exciting properties to discover.

The date to set aside is Saturday 11th November from 10am to 3.30pm.

This is the third annual House & Garden tour held to fundraise for Methven Care Trust, the group spearheading the project to replace Methven House with a new purpose-built rest home within Camrose Estate. The aim is to allow Methven locals with the opportunity to continue to live in the community they love as they age.

Nine properties will be up for viewing - the same number as last year - with a new attraction being a cluster in the countryside around historic Barrhill Village. Because of this vehicles are required to get around the tour.

Here's a couple of teasers to whet your appetite.

For gin drinkers, this three bedroom farmers home built five years ago will make you smile. A painting of a Bombay Sapphire bottle of gin given as a gift to the owner was the inspiration of the blue kitchen. Having acquired the original Methven BNZ's foyer doors prior to building, it was inevitable these would feature as a truly inspiring entrance. Visitors will also be rewarded with assorted classic vehicles and stationary engines on display, part of the owner's private collection.

Another rural property features history detailing back to the mid 1800's but the current home was built in 1931 with evidence retained in the original leadlight glass windows and wooden panelling. The garden consists of a formal area with buxus and rambling areas with a garden path. The vege garden boasts roses and lavender and fruit trees on its perimeter. A museum on site will be open on the day

Devonshire teas will be offered again by Methven House staff at one of the properties and raffles will be available so bring plenty of coins. New Aged Care Facility - A Step Closer

Allan and Alma Lochhead, who established the Lochhead Charitable Trust in 1988, wished that a 6150 square metre (one and half acre) block of land on Grace Ireland Drive, Methven, be given to the community of Methven for the establishment of a new aged care facility.

For four decades, the elderly of Methven has been cared for in Methven House, the former maternity hospital on Morgan Street. Methven House is unique in Mid-Canterbury as it is owned by the people of Methven and administered by a Committee comprised of community members.

“Forty years of care, forty years of commitment, forty years of empathy and forty years of devotion has been given to the people that have walked through the doors and made Methven House their home. That, quite frankly, is a mighty effort for a community of this size.” Said Methven Care Trust Chairperson Jo Suyker.

But now the building needs to be replaced and the Methven Care Trust was established in October 2014 to raise funds for and oversee the building of a new aged care facility. Fundraising has begun in earnest with $5m set as the target.

Advance Ashburton, who has taken over the management of the Lochhead Charitable Trust, is delighted to fulfil the Lochhead’s wishes and transfer the land to the Methven Care Trust.

“Having the land demonstrates Methven Care Trust’s commitment for the project to the district. Methven has a wide respect for Allan and Alma Lochhead’s philanthropy to our community and we are honoured to be the benefactors of this very generous gift”, said Jo Suyker.

On September 9th, the land valued at $470,000 was transferred to the Methven Care Trust and the new facility, which will provide a modern, sustainable and community-run residential-care home, became one big step closer.

AGM Treasurers Report 2017

The Methven Care Trust has had another amazing year of Fundraising. To have a surplus of $218,534, up on the previous year by nearly $40,000 is a credit to the trustees and volunteers, of this worthy local cause.

However, the reality is that $5 million needs to be raised within 5 years to be able to complete this project, to the timeframe set. The only way this can be done is by the community believing this is a worthy cause and supporting this project.

We ask, have any of you or do you know of any members of the community that would like to see this project succeed and are prepared to donate to this cause?

Some of you may have thought about leaving a gift to a charity in your will. If this is the case, have you considered giving why you are alive – this way you get to see where and how your money is spent. You also get 33 cents back, from the government, for every dollar you donate. This benefit is not available for donations made via your will.

We would appreciate hearing from anyone who may be interested in discussing this further.

As awkward as it is to ask for money – this is not for us, but to build a fabulous facility for our locals.

Please also be assured, that by showing an interest you will not be expected to donate, but we would love to share our vision more with anyone on an individual basis.

Also – no donation is too small - or too big.

Mini Olympics Team Challenge is on

Things are getting busy for the organisers of the Methven Care Trust Mini Olympics Team Challenge, to be held Friday 13th October this year.

Neil Gubby and his partner Sandra, owners of Newzengland Clay Shooting and Archery Services at Terrace Downs had the idea for the Mini Olympics and brought it to the Methven Care Trust who were excited to get on board.

The Olympics event will run for one afternoon and requires four to a team, each participant will compete in all four sports: Clay shooting, Archery, Golf or Gumboot Throwing. Neil says "experience isn't necessary, so to save you throwing all your gumboots over the neighbours fence, he and his team will give each player training on the day".

The fundraiser is sponsored by Mount Hutt Helicopters, another great local business keen to help with the Methven Care Trust and their new proposed Methven House building at Camrose Estate.

"We have some amazing prizes accumulating, they include some big ticket items for local and high country tourism identities" , say's Neil.

Prizes will be awarded to the best themed team, top male and female individuals and the top team will also get a trophy.

Newzengland Lts is one of our local tourist focused businesses and owner Neil certainly has the skills and expertise to go with it. As a senior instructor for 12 years at the Royal Berkshire Shooting School in England, he not only gained experience in the sport, he competed in many clay shooting competitions in the UK, including the Beretta World Championships in 1997, gaining 2nd in his class. In his five years at Newzengland, Neil enjoys sharing and teaching his passion in one of the best locations in the world.

Neil held a lot of charity events in the UK before moving to New Zealand 14 years ago and is excited about this fundraiser with a difference, and even more, that all the profits will be going to the Methven Care Trust.

"I want to challenge local businesses, sports clubs and groups to get a team together for this entertaining and challenging day" say's Neil, "it will be an action packed afternoon where you may try something new, get to know a few other locals and end the night with great food and lots of fun".

While the event is to be held at the proposed new building site in Camrose Estate, the prize giving will be at the Blue Pub's Samuels Bar, in Methven, a spit roast dinner will be provided while the teams are awarded prizes for their efforts and enjoy a well deserved drink.

Registrations have started coming in for the Mini Olympics, so get your team together and don't miss out on this day of fun and fundraising. The event is catering for adults 18 years and upwards and there will be up to twenty teams of four on the day.

Businesses, why not make this a unique Christmas function, or sports teams and groups - drum up some competition between yourselves and enter.

Variety Concert

Trust benefits from Mud Plug

Methven Care Trust was thrilled to accept a donation of $5,000.00 from the Mid Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club Inc following the huge success of their Mud Plug event held on Sunday 7th May at Alford Forest.

Sunny skies on the day of event following a few wet day's prior provided the perfect mix for enthusiastic mud pluggers who challenged themselves and their vehicles around the slippery track. Spectators were entertained with plenty of engine revving and mud roosting!

We were asked to support the event by means of providing volunteers to assist with car parking and crowd control on the day, in return for a donation, we were obviously very grateful to be considered by the club and extremely pleased with the value of the donation received.

The event also benefitted the Alford Forest Rural Fire Unit and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Rare opportunity to see salmon release up-close

SORRY EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS

The opportunity to get up close to watch the release of young salmon is the latest fundraising event for Methven Care Trust.

The Annual Salmon Smolt Release in conjunction with Montrose Estate and Fish&Game has been organised by neighbouring Rakaia Gorge farmer Donna Field.

On Sunday 23rd July (the last day of the school holidays), thousands of salmon smolt will be released by Fish&Game to boost the salmon population in the Rakaia River. This only happens once a year providing a unique opportunity to learn about the life cycle of one of New Zealand's most popular fish. The 5km drive to exit Montrose Estate via adjacent Cleardale Station allows locals to get a taste of high country life and the grandeur of the gorge.

With a sausage sizzle and coffee providing refreshments, the 9am to 1pm event is definitely worth getting up early for. The actual salmon smolt release will happen between 10am and 10.30am. However the salmon hatchery will be open for people to look around and lots of young salmon will still be in the creek. When the salmon are released, children and other volunteers will be given the chance to carry buckets of smolt to the creek to tip them in.

As the location requires travel over farm tracks, the experience is not suitable for low clearance cars. Interested parties are advised to wear warm clothes and wear gumboots or boots.

Donna says the Annual Salmon Smolt Release is a follow up to her previous fundraising venture in the form of the "Rakaia Gorgeous Ball" held for six years with half the money going to Methven House.

"I've always been keen on looking after the older people in our communities and the release of the salmon smolt will be a celebratory occasion in a beautiful spot and interesting to watch."

"My favourite part of the release is watching the eels come out to eat the smolt and getting so full they can barely move. The eels are huge and impressive fish and it is wonderful to see them."

"It is impressive that the people of our town can find the energy and enthusiasm to fund housing for the elderly. So many older people want to stay in Methven close to family and friends rather than go to Ashburton and we are creating that opportunity. I would like everyone to get behind the project and contribute in any way they can."

Mini Olympics come to Methven

Medal fever will hit Methven in October with the announcement of the inaugural Team Challenge Mini Olympics - a new fundraising event for Methven Care Trust.

Sponsored by Mt Hutt Helicopters 2013 Ltd and organised by New Zengland Clay Shooting and Archery Services Ltd, the event will see teams of four compete in archery, golf, clay bird shooting and gumboot throwing.

There will be prizes for the top male and female competitors, the top team, best 'themed' team and a presentation of a trophy for overall winning team. The Mini Olympics is open to those aged 18 years and over.

Methven Care Trust fundraising co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel says the trust was very excited when New Zengland Ltd, a local tourism company, brought the idea to them.

"New Zengland Ltd saw it as a good way to give back to the community as they run tourism activities from Terrace Downs and is keen to expose locals to their services. And Mt Hutt Helicopters 2013 Ltd has come onboard as a sponsor to help lift the profile of this inaugural event. The trust is very grateful to both businesses for their support. We're now hoping locals will support it as a work outing, team building exercise or early Christmas function."

The Mini Olympics takes place Friday 13th October at the site of the proposed new rest home for Methven within Camrose Estate.

It will be an afternoon of fun competition with all profits going to Methven Care Trust, which has a goal of raising $5.5million to rebuild the resthome. All equipment and coaching will be supplied and experience isn't necessary.

Local businesses, sports clubs and community groups are invited to register teams with intense rivalry expected. Out of town teams will also be sought to up the stakes.

Entry into the competition includes a complimentary beer or wine and a spit roast dinner at the Blue Pub at the end of the day. The prize giving will also feature an auction and raffles.

A Variety Concert has been organised for Friday 11th August (new date confirmed following post phonement of original event date, 21st July) at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall with all proceeds going to Methven Care Trust.

A talented group of ladies from Methven known as 'The Fascinating Ladies' are one of the star attractions. Led by Methven music teacher Kate Lambarth, the ladies choir will perform classics such as 'What a wonderful world' and 'Operator' followed by some more classical pieces.

The Fascinating Ladies will join together with the Men's MSA choir on the night, which Ian Totty was a member of, to sing three songs sure to please local music buffs. Further musical guests from the Methven area will also perform bringing locals a great night of music and talent from our wonderful town.

Tickets (which include supper) are now available at the Methven and Ashburton I-Sites and from choir members, $20 adult, $5 child.

Methven Care Trust benefits from farmers' efforts

There are many unseen faces supporting the Methven Care Trust project and one of these couples is Keith and Shari Early.

The Earlys are among farmers raising weaned calves for the trust. The take in steer or heifer calves suitable for grazing and take them through to finishing. The process can add another $1000 in value to the animal with all proceeds going directly to the trust. Methven Care Trust is aiming to raise $5.5million to rebuild Methven House so aged care can continue to be offered in Methven.

The Earlys currently have two steers and were involved last season in raising animals.

"We just run them with our own cattle the same age. They get treated the same, drenched, vaccinations and so on. For me it's a painless way to fundraise. They're just in with the mob and with two extras you don't even notice the extra outlay," says Keith.

The Earlys have reared calves for many community organisations - St John's Presbyterian Church, Lauriston School, the local cricket and rugby clubs and Lyndhurst Reserve. Helping out Methven Care Trust is just another good cause to support.

"It's painless as far as we're concerned because there's no cash outlay or juggling around. The first two went to the works last spring and the funds go direct to Methven Care Trust. So it's simple in that respect," he says.

While Keith's involvement with Methven Care Trust has been limited to this project, he understands what the trust is trying to achieve.

"I hope it's a long way off for us (needing aged care) but we can understand the concept of the whole thing and this is one way we can support it. Rather than having to fork out $500."

Jo Suyker, Chairperson of Methven Care Trust and a member of the Dairy fundraising subcommittee, says dairy farmers kick-start the process by providing weaned calves.

"They rear them and give us anything suitable that we can place on farms to be taken through to finishing."

Six finishing farms are involved at the moment with calves on average generating around $1500 when they go to the works.

"Farmers just see this as part of their business. And we're just really grateful to take the animals that they can provide. We're also grateful to the finishing farms that graze them."

This is the third season Methven Care Trust has run a calf rearing programme which to date has contributed approximately $20,000 towards the fundraising target.

Time to get serious about rebuilding Methven House

Two years after the fundraising campaign for a new Methven House commenced, organisers say it’s time to get serious about putting money into the project – before the building becomes too expensive to maintain or earthquake concerns deem it unusable.

“I took my first breath in this current building. I will not take my last in it. The building will beat me to it,” said Methven Care Trust chairperson Jo Suyker at the home’s recent 40th birthday celebrations.

In a speech to 50 invited guests, Mrs Suyker said it was a tribute to the Methven community that the town had cared for its elderly for four decades in the former maternity hospital building on Morgan Street.

“Forty years of care, 40 years of commitment, 40 years of empathy and 40 years of devotion that has been given to the people that have walked through the doors and made Methven House their home. That, quite frankly, is a mighty effort for a community of this size.”

However, another four decades won’t be possible if Methven people don’t realise what they have to lose if sufficient funds can’t be raised.

“Methven Care Trust, along with support from the community has set a target of five years to raise $5million for the building. To put it quite bluntly, Methven Care Trust, in these initial stages has been a glorified fundraising mechanism. We are nearly two and a half years in on this project and to date have $503,000 in the bank. A little frightening you may say with half our target years gone and only 10% raised. But I am quietly confident this community will rise to the challenge, and for the sake of taking the responsibility of caring for our elderly seriously, see us over the line.”

With more than 200 people – including preschoolers and school children visiting Methven House on its 40th birthday – Mrs Suyker said it was hoped greater exposure to the home would open people’s eyes to the asset on their doorstep.

“Whilst we enjoy this day of fond memories, celebration and gratitude to those that fought and rallied against the odds to establish Methven House, we must now look forward and into the future as to how we want the next 40 plus years to evolve. Like many here today and those that have gone before us, we must now too fight and rally to create a new space to ensure the continuation of Methven House’s great legacy.”

Methven Care Trust was established in October 2014 to raise funds for and oversee the building of a new aged care facility for Methven on gifted land in Camrose Estate. The trust recently developed a pledge form that allows residents to commit to supporting the project over an agreed period of time or via a one-off donation. Flying the flag

This has been a true team effort with the costs relating to having the flag designed and made, being kindly donated by a family in our community, and the base being made by the team at Richards Custom Machinery here in Methven.

This now allows us to have a higher profile when attending events and 'flying the flag' to raise public awareness.

Giving back to remember Dad

Losing her dad has inspired Hilary Totty to give something back to the community that supported her family when Ian Totty died a year ago in a tragic accident.

The 31 year old Christchurch multi-sporter is raising funds for registered charity Methven Care Trust when she runs 27km of the Kepler trail in Te Anau in December 2016.

Hilary is asking for donations via a Facebook page Rebuild Methven House. The aim is to support the goal to raise $5.5million and build a new, aged-care facility for the Methven community. Community stalwart Ian Totty was chairman of Methven Care Trusts's fundraising committee, as well as a staunch supporter of many community projects in the Methven and Ashburton foothills areas.

Going public about her family's loss isn't easy, but people's support of the cause helps her focus on something positive.

"As soon as it happened I felt a strong urge to do something to give back. We were incredibly humbled with the support the Staveley and Methven community gave our whole family when dad died. Doing something positive out of this thing that was so very hard for us was important to me, and Methven Care Trust was a cause that meant a lot to him."

Making sport part of the fundraising equation makes sense, says Hilary, as it connects her to Ian.

"A massive part of dad's and my relationship was about sport. Since I was 10, dad travelled around New Zealand taking me to events and had always been incredibly supportive. He loved sport himself and would do anything and everything he could to help me."

Returning to trail running and other sporting events has been strange without dad at her side.

"I feel his absence at my races. It's weird because dad's not there." Over the last decade, Ian joined Hilary at Spring Challenge events around the South Island and supported her in two Coast to Coast events. When Ian died, Hilary was training for the full 66km Kepler race, but shortly afterwards hurt her back and ended up pulling out.

"I prolapsed a disk and couldn't run." Surgery in March fixed the nerve that was damaged and affecting the function of her foot.

"I couldn't even lift my heal one millimetre off the ground and basically had to learn to run from scrath. I started by running 20 metres. It's been a long way back to running 27Km."

Her first race back saw her roped into a three person team competing in the women's Spring Challenge event in September. After joing two days out from the race, Hilary's team cam second out of 190 entries in the six hour open category. Recently she competed in Methven's Peak to Pub event coming eighth, a credible result given three months ago she couldn't run at all.

While the last year has been difficult recovering from a back injury and processing her grief, focusing on the Rebuild Methven House fundraising project helps her move forward.

"I have always posted a lot of stuff on Facebook about my sport and sponsors, but as far as advertising what happened with dad I didn't want people to feel sorry for me. It took a long time to write the Rebuild Methven House page to make sure it came across right. I think it's important people know the motivation. I really just want to take a positive outlook and do something that's outside me. I'm just trying to give something back."

"It's got people thinking about it and I've also had good feedback from people in Methven saying they think it's nice that someone young is getting involved."

Hilary has had exposure to aged care through her work as a dietitian, previously being responsible for nutrition plans for rest homes residents in the United Kingdom. Currently she is involved in menu planning for hospital foodservices in Canterbury, but has always had a soft spot for the elderly.

In many ways, Hilary feels she's benefited by the positive reactions to her fundraising.

"People have been absolutely incredible and this experience has brough me a lot closer to many people. Methven is a place that bands together when needed. I feel like this is such a little thing I am doing, but hopefully it's raising awareness amongst people who may not otherwise know about the cause.

"I know that dad would be so proud of this and it's what he would want. I always knew how much he had done for our community, but when you see it all out there it's pretty humbling. You can always do more. I'd like to help until Methven Care Trust gets to their target. I's not going to stop in December."

Methven Care Trust unveils signs

Methven Care Trust has unveiled two fundraising signs in the centre of Methven to update the community on progress towards meeting the $5million target to rebuild Methven House.

Thanks to Supervalue owners Kelly and Don McDonald and Four Square owners Garry and Lynn Eddington, signs have been erected on the side of Methven's two supermarkets. A graphic of the proposed new rest home - made up of $10K bricks - shows the total amount needed. So far nearly $420,000 has been raised so those bricks are coloured orange. As funds increase, the bricks will change colour providing transparent reporting on fundraising progress. The sign was created by Janine Peters from Designamite and the framing and casing work contributed by Harvey Grieve as a Methven Lions project. Further donors provided materials and additional labour and Methven Care Trust thanks all parties involved in helping us build and install the signs.

Don't forget the trust's Methven and Foothills House & Garden tour is on next weekend, Saturday 19th November. Tickets can be purchased from the Methven and Ashburton Isites right up to the day. Nine properties in and around Methven will be open for viewing - all new properties compared to last year's tour. The event provided a wonderful excuse to enjoy gorgeous local gardens and properties, with all funds raised going to the trust. Devonshire teas and a fantastic raffle will be on sale at one property so be sure to bring cash.

In tandem with the house and garden tour, the trust is repeating last year's successful rock fundraiser. Alpine sourced greywacke rocks and limestone versions are on sale now at KT's Contracting on Line Road (ranging in cost from $50 to $400). Example rocks will be showcased at one property on the house and garden tour. These make perfect Christmas or special occasion gifts and free delivery is offered to addresses within 7km of Methven.

Gardening keeps Doug happy .....

"This is a good reminder of what we're fundraising for. Methven House staff and supporters going the extra mile for residents as demonstrated by Doug's story below. Despite a modest increase in size, the new aged care facility will be just as responsive to residents needs."

Just because you age doesn't mean passions die. Doug Paulson (87) is living proof of that. The Methven House resident continues to grow vegetables made possible by support from staff and volunteers associated with the community-run rest home.

Doug arrived at Methven House last November after falling at his daughter's home. Increased frailty, combined with an existing eye condition, made returning to his daughter's place impossible. The former Waimate resident was initially reluctant to embrace his new home. "I did find it a bit hard when I first came in. But once I got used to it, it was alright."

Keen to help Doug settle, Methven House staff researched his hobbies. They discovered a love of vegetable gardening since childhood so a plan was hatched to create a raised garden. Local couple Paul and Julianna Coldicott donated materials and labour, while Kevin from KT's Contracting provided soil. "I didn't know anything about it until the bed was done. It knocked me back a bit (to see the bed). I wasn;t expecting it."

Over summer, Doug planted lettuce, tomatoes, radishes and beans. His one stipulation was no flowers and this included parsley. While his efforts have slowed now winter is here, Doug still has leeks, silver beet and parsnips in the ground.

All produce is donated to Methven House going into the meals for 13 residents. It makes Doug feel good to know he's contributing. He estimates two recycling bins of tomatoes, several lettuces, dozens of radishes and four feeds of French and Dwarf beans were produced over summer. He downplays his efforts. "It's not a big bed, only a small one. But I can get everything done in 20 minutes to half an hour."

With arthritis plaguing his hands, Doug doesn't know how long he will be able to keep gardening. But he appreciates the opportunity to work outside. "They did a great job with the raised bed. It's even got a cover so it's very tidy."

With a working life that included work in shearing sheds, fence building, spud picking, crane and tractor driving and seed cleaning, Doug isn't one to sit around. Despite near blindness, he walks regularly around Methven. "I follow the lines on the pavement." And the raised garden keeps him busy planning new crops. "I tried cauliflower and broccoli but they didn't work. A lot of things bolted last summer. But we got things in pretty late so maybe that was it." Whatever the reason, Methven House has provided a new lease of life for Doug and he's very appreciative.

There are many ways you can donate to Methven Care Trust. Pete and Maryanne Hayward didn't want attention for their efforts, but we wanted to tell their story.

Last year the Methven couple provided a paddock just outside of Methven for the trust's cropping activities. With inputs including labour supplied by Colin and Jocelyn Lill, a crop of barley was sown, cultivated and sold for a tidy profit of just over $24,000. The Haywards were reluctant to go public about their involvement.

"I didn't do this to talk about it," says Pete. But when pressed, he admits it's a good feeling to help a community cause. "it was well worth it. We didn't miss the paddock. It was only out for one year." The Hayward's paddock was old pasture beforehand so the time out has set it up well for future options. "There were definitely some advantages for us. We've been able to donate something to the cause without having to think about it too much."

Maryanne says the couple are fully behind the rebuild project for a new aged care facility for Methven.

"It's absolutely imperative that we have something like this in the future. We definitely support it."

She hopes other landowners and farmers will similarly consider donating either cropping or grazing land for a period of time to support the trust.

"This has been relatively painless for us. It's something we could do to contribute in a small way to the future of Methven."

Other fundraising streams underway for Methven Care Trust include the sale of pea straw and baleage. Delivery for pea straw within the immediate Methven vicinity is $5 per bale. Both can be purchased by contacting our Fundraising Co-ordinator.

Meanwhile personal donations keep rolling in. The trust's residential flier distributed to Methven households two months ago has resulted in close to $20,000 in total being donated. At BNZ Methven, the ladies report anonymous donations turning up via electronic banking and coffee cup money boxes arriving over the counter. It doesn't matter how big or small the donation is, Methven Care Trust appreciates all of the support we receive. Every donation adds up, no matter how small.

Rock Fundraiser To Be Repeated

Methven Care Trust would like to thank Jack Harmer and his team from Harmer Earthmoving and Kevin Thompson from KT's Contracting for their assistance with our rock fundraiser.

Several thousand dollars has been raised from the sale of rocks donated by both parties. Kevin and Jack also helped deliver the boulders and we're grateful for the use of their heavy machinery and trucks.

The success of the fundraiser means it is likely to be repeated later this year. Thanks to everyone who bought rocks and those who have expressed interest in purchasing when we repeat the initiative ..... watch this space!

House & Garden Tour a success!

Our inaugural 'Through the Years - Methven and Foothills House & Garden Tour' held on Saturday 28th November proved to be a shining winner for our fundraising committee.

We would like to congratulate the thirteen properties, eleven homes and 2 gardens, on the high standard of presentation of their properties and all the hard work in the lead up to the event that the property owners obviously had invested.

Our stellar volunteers are also obviously key to the smooth running of the day, as without them we can't do it!

Rock Fundraiser for Methven Care Trust

Always wanted a feature rock for your garden, several to create a rock wall or to finish landscaping your section?

Methven Care Trust is selling Rhoylite rocks sourced from the Mt Alford area until Friday 4th December. The fundraiser coincides with the trust's Methven & Foothills House and Garden Tour which will be held Saturday 28th November.

Trust Chairwomen Joanna Suyker says Mt Alford farmer and fundraising group member Dan Symons came up with the idea.

"It's a perfect fit following our House & Garden tour as people will be inspired by what they see and may want to undertake a landscaping project," says Joanna.

Dan's original motivation was getting rid of the rocks covering part of his foothills farm. But after talking to neighbour Jack Harmer, the pair decided larger rocks on the Harmer property would be more attractive to buyers.

Dan worked with Harmers Transport to bring three sample rocks to town and small, medium and large speciments can be viewed on the front lawn at Methven House, 24 Morgan Street. Wareings Transport helped lift the rocks onto the site and KT's Contracting will assist with free delivery around Methven township during December. KT's Contracting has also donated a series of smaller limestone rocks for the fundraiser.

Orders can be placed by emailing admin@methvencaretrust.co.nz until Friday 4th December and the fundraising committee will deliver during December, making them a perfect Christmas present for that hard to buy for partner, family member or friend! For deliveries outside Methven, buyers can negotiate a delivery price. The approximate rock sizes are; small - H25cm x W35cm x L30cm $50, medium - H40cm x W60cm x L50cm $100, and large from H70cm x W80cm x L60cm $200-$400, and some extra large specimens are available - price to be negotiated.

Methven Care Trust holds AGM and looks forward to House & Garden Tour

Two new faces have joined Methven Care Trust. Teacher Jan Anderson and farmer Roger Henderson were announced as trustees at the recent AGM.

Chairperson Jo Suyker thanked both for committing their time and energy to Methven Care Trust. The AGM began with an acknowledgement of the contribution of former trustee Ian Totty.

"Ian's passion and commitment as a trustee and also chair of the fundraising committee was worn for all to see. A true gentleman to work with we were most fortunate to have had his input in our first year. Any motivation needed, on our part, to see this project through will come from our thinking of Ian and wanting to honour his memory," said Mrs Suyker.

The trust now turns its attention to the forthcoming Methven and Foothills House and Garden Tour on Saturday 28th November. Tickets are on sale at both the Methven and Ashburton iSites for just $20 with all proceeds supporting the project to build a new aged care facility for Methven. Thirteen properties will be opened up in our district; eleven houses and two gardens. Some spectacular homes and gardens are promised and interest in tickets is already strong so make sure you don't miss out.

Another exciting innovation is a rock fundraiser. Methven Care Trust has been offered a paddock-full of weathered rocks perfect for landscaping and garden placement. Examples of the foothills-sourced rocks will be made available within Methven township shortly with orders being taken for delivery before Christmas in the Methven area. Methven Care Trust Update

First of all, Methven Care Trust would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to our former trustee Ian Totty. Ian’s passing was a huge shock and upset, not only for the trust and the fundraising committee he led, but for all the other groups and causes Ian was involved with, and not least his family and friends. Ian was certainly pivotal to getting Methven Care Trust up and running and showed great leadership in enthusing our group of volunteers and developing the vision for the replacement for Methven House. We will miss him deeply.

Last month, Methven Care Trust held our launch public meeting to unveil the concept plans for a new Methven aged care facility. In freezing conditions, we were delighted with a turnout of more than 150 people at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall. The response and interest on the night confirmed that we are on the right track. Questions were asked and answered about the design of the complex, how it would be staffed, where the funds would come from and how long it would take us to build it. The current plan is for a new facility offering rest home level care with 20 bedrooms (all with ensuite bathrooms. The facility will be sited on land gifted by the Lochhead Charitable Trust on Grace Ireland Drive. It will be designed so future stages can be added as funds allow and demand dictates. The big question on the night was how much will it cost? Currently estimates have brought the build in at around $5.5million. A base level amount will be fundraised locally and then regional and national grants will be applied for. In the next few months, Methven Care Trust will work with local groups and volunteers to run a series of fundraising events. The first confirmed event is a ‘Foothills House and Garden tour’ on Saturday Nov ember 28. Further volunteers are still needed to be hosts at the 12 properties which will be open during the tour. You need to be available between 9am and 3.30pm and two hosts will be stationed at each house. Other ideas under development include a trial bike ride, a four wheel drive tour, a vintage car rally and vintage machinery open day and coin trail. All of these ideas have been contributed by the community but require manpower and support to happen. And we are not stopping there. Further suggestions are welcome as we have an ambitious target and our strategy is to involve as wide a cross section of the community as possible.

Methven Care Trust signs and posters are now displayed around town and brochures freely available at the supermarkets and local shops. Finally, for those of you who came to the public launch meeting, took away the BNZ fundraising cups and have since handed them into BNZ Methven with donations, thanks for your support!
